Atlanta Civil War Round Table 2020
Richard Barksdale Harwell Book Award
The Atlanta Civil War Round Table has awarded its 32nd annual Richard Barksdale
Harwell Award to Hampton Newsome for his book The Fight for the Old North
State: The Civil War in North Carolina, January-May 1864, published by the
University Press of Kansas. The Atlanta Round Table has presented the Harwell
Award annually since 1989. The 2020 Harwell Award honors the best book on a
civil war topic for books published in 2019.
Newsome is an
independent author who lives in Arlington, Virginia. In addition to The
Fight for the Old North State, he is the author of Richmond Must Fall:
The Richmond- Petersburg Campaign, October 1864 (Kent State University
Press, 2013), a study of Grant's and Lee's battles in the weeks before the 1864
election. He is also co-editor of Civil War Talks: Further Reminiscences of
George S. Bernard and His Fellow Veterans (University of Virginia Press,
2012), along with John Selby and John Horn. He is currently working on a study
of the Blackberry Raid against Richmond during the Gettysburg Campaign.
The Harwell Award honors the late Richard Barksdale Harwell, a nationally
recognized historian, librarian, bibliographer and first president of the
Atlanta Round Table. The award consists of a monetary prize plus an engraved
plaque recognizing the event. Recent winners include, David Powell, Timothy
Smith, Allen Guelzo, Jeffry Wert Brian Wills and Wilson Greene.
Newsome
will speak at the November 2020 meeting of the Atlanta Round Table, at which
time he will be presented with the award.
