Atlanta Civil War Round Table 2017
Richard Barksdale Harwell Book Award

The Civil War Round Table of Atlanta has awarded its 29th annual Richard Barksdale Harwell Book Award to Earl Hess for his book  Braxton Bragg: The Most Hated Man in the Confederacy.

Dr. Hess is the second two-time recipient of the Harwell Award.  In 2010 he was recognized by the Round Table for his 2009 book In the Trenches at Petersburg: Field Fortifications and Confederate Defeat.  Both of the award-winning books were published by the University of North Carolina Press.

The Civil War Round Table has presented the Harwell Award annually since 1989 for the best book on a Civil War topic published in the proceeding year.

Dr. Hess (Ph.D., Purdue University, 1986) is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of History at Lincoln Memorial University. He has authored a number of books on the Civil War, including: Lee's Tar Heels; Pickett's Charge: The Last Attack at Gettysburg (nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 2002); and The Rifled Musket in Civil War Combat.

The Award consists of a monetary prize plus an engraved plaque recognizing the event.  Previous winners include Jeffry Wert, Gary Gallagher, William C. Davis, James I. "Bud" Roberston, James McPherson, Brian Steel Wills, Allen Guelzo, David Powell and Russell S. Bonds.

Hess will speak at the October 2017 meeting of the Atlanta Civil War Round Table and will be presented with the award at that time.

Other finalists for the 2017 award were Albert Z. Connor and Chris Mackowski for Seizing Destiny; Ronand C. White for American Ulysses: A Life of Ulysses S. Grant; Noah Andre Trudeau for Lincoln's Last Journey
