Richard Barksdale Harwell Book Award
The Civil War Round Table of Atlanta has awarded its 23rd annual Richard Barksdale Harwell Book Award to David A. Powell for his book Failure in the Saddle: Nathan B. Forrest, Joe Wheeler and the Confederate Cavalry in the Chickamauga Campaign. The Civil War Round Table has presented the Harwell Award annually since 1989 for the best book on a Civil War topic published in the proceeding year.
David A. Powell graduated in 1983 from Virginia Military Institute with a B. A. in history. Mr. Powell has written articles for various magazines. In 2009 he published his first book, the well received The Maps of Chickamauga, An Atlas of the Chickamauga Campaign. David Powell has earned a reputation as an excellent field guide for the Chickamauga Battlefield.
Mr. Powell's latest book Failure in the Saddle is the first book length study to examine the Confederate Cavalry operations during the Chickamauga Campaign. The book contains an analysis of previous historians' opinions on the subject, good maps, photographs and a driving tour. Failure in the Saddle and The Maps of Chickamauga are published by Savas Beattie.
The Harwell Award honors the late Richard Barksdale Harwell,
a nationally recognized historian, librarian, bibliographer and first president
of the Atlanta Civil War Round Table. The Award consists of a monetary prize plus an engraved plaque recognizing the event. Previous winners include, Earl J. Hess, Gary Gallagher, William C. Davis, James I. "Bud" Roberston, James Mc Pherson and Russell S. Bonds.
David Powell will speak at the November 2011 meeting of the Atlanta Civil War Round Table. At that time he will be presented the award.
Finalists for the 2010 Harwell Award included Gary Ecelbarger's, The Day Dixie Died, The Battle of Atlanta (Thomas Dunne Books, St. Martin's Press) and Donald Stokers's, The Grand Design Strategy and the U. S. Civil War ( Oxford).
