Atlanta Civil War Round Table 2021
Richard Barksdale Harwell Book Award

The Atlanta Civil War Round Table has awarded its 33rd annual Richard Barksdale Harwell Award to Stephen Davis for his book Into Tennessee and Failure: John Bell Hood, published by Mercer University Press. The Atlanta Round Table has presented the Harwell Award annually since 1989. The 2021 Harwell Award honors the best book on a civil war topic published in 2020.

Into Tennessee and Failure is the second volume of a two-part work examining Hood's generalship in 1864.  This second volume analyses Hood's performance following the fall of Atlanta, as he led the Army of Tennessee northward across the Tennessee River.  Hood's force failed to trap Gen. John Schofield's retreating Federal army at Spring Hill, then fought a bloody battle at Franklin.  On December 15 and 16 Hood's army was assaulted by a superior force under Gen. George Thomas and was all but destroyed as an effective fighting force.

In this volume, as in the previous one, Davis skillfully describes the movements of the Army of Tennessee and the command decisions made by its leader in the waning days of the Confederacy. Davis also examines Hood's relationship with his superiors and his communications with them after the disaster at Nashville.

In addition to the two volumes on John Bell Hood, Davis has authored five books on the Atlanta Campaign and hundreds of articles on this campaign and other aspects of the Civl War.

Davis earned a B.A and Ph.D. from Emory University and an M.A. from the University of North Carolina. His most recent work, co-authored by Bill Hendrick, is The Atlanta Daily Intelligencer Covers the Civil War: A Foray into Confederate Culture, to be published by the University of Tenneseee Press.

The Harwell Award honors the late Richard Barksdale Harwell, a nationally recognized historian, librarian, bibliographer and first president of the Atlanta Round Table. The award consists of a monetary prize plus an engraved plaque recognizing the event. Recent winners include, David Powell, Timothy Smith, Allen Guelzo, Jeffry Wert Brian Wills and Wilson Greene.
