Richard Barksdale Harwell Book Award

The Civil War Round Table of Atlanta has awarded its 23rd annual Richard Barksdale Harwell to Jeffry Wert for his book A Glorious Army: Robert E. Lee’s Triumph 1862-1863. The Atlanta Roundtable has presented the Harwell Award annually since 1989 for the best book on a Civil War topic published in the preceding year.

Jeffry Wert graduated cum laude with a B.A. from Lock Haven University and an M.A. from Pennsylvania State University. Mr. Wert taught history to high school students in Spring Mills, Pennsylvania. He has authored several books on America’s Civil War including several biographies of James Longstreet, J.E.B. Stuart and John S. Mosby.

Mr. Wert’s latest book, A Glorious Army is a study of the Army of Northern Virginia. The focus is on the first 13 months Robert E. Lee was in command. Wert provides analysis of Lee’s victories and the loss at Gettysburg. Using the latest scholarship Mr. Wert offers fresh assessments of Lee and his top lieutenants.

The Harwell Award honors the late Richard B. Harwell. A nationally recognized historian, librarian, bibliographer and first president of the Atlanta Civil War Round Table. The award consists of a monetary prize plus an engraved plaque recognizing the event. Previous winners include Gary Gallagher, James McPherson, William C. Davis and Russell S. Bonds.
